Women's Self Defense Class

Colonial's Safety and Emergency Task Force is sponsoring a Women's Self Defense workshop on Saturday, March 20, 2010. SafeLife will teach the class at Colonial from 10 a.m. until 12 noon in the Social Hall. SafeLife teaches the tactics and techniques that enable individuals to avoid personal threat situations if possible, and respond effectively to them if they cannot be avoided.

The cost is only $20.00 per person. This is open to all women of the church and their guests. Girls under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. The instructor for this class is a former police and special operations officer with over 30 years experience in the martial and combat arts. You are not required to pay up front, but we would appreciate it if you would take the time to sign up so we know approximately how many plan to attend. Sign up will begin on Sunday, February 21st in the Narthex. You may also email your reservation to Linda Moses luvslife48@gmail.com or call 913-642-1335. You may pay the day of the class.

Adult Education Opportunities

  • A book discussion on Why Christianity Must Change or Die by Bishop Shelby Spong, meeting for six consecutive weeks on Sundays Feb. 14 to March 28 after the 10 a.m. service. The book is available through the Johnson County Library system or at local book stores. You can also order a copy for as little as $5 on Amazon.com. Please contact Ancel Neuburger at 913-438-4736 or lorann@sbcglobal.net if you have questions.
  • On Sunday March 7, Senator Tim Owens will give a legislative update after the 10:00 service. Join us to find out the latest from the Kansas legislature.

The Colonial Board of Christian Education will present a two-part series on the Holocaust in April and invites everyone to the two dynamic sessions.

  • April 18: At 11:00 a.m. Rhonda Ireland and Jeff Benes, members of the teaching cadre from the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, will present an overview of the Holocaust. The Midwest Center for Holocaust Education was founded in 1993 by Holocaust survivors Isak Federman and Jack Mandelbaum to teach the history and lessons of the Holocaust to people of all races and religious beliefs throughout the Midwest to prevent its recurrence and perpetuate understanding, compassion, and mutual respect for generations to come. Join us in the Heritage Room for this one-hour presentation.
  • April 25: Steve Cole, whose mother was interred in concentration camps and lost much of her family, will speak about his mother’s experiences. Steve’s mother, Ilsa Cole, was born in Geilenkirchen, Germany, a town near the Dutch border with only a few Jewish families. Ilsa graduated valedictorian in 1932 at the age of 16. Her parents and most of her extended family died in concentration camps, as did the family of her husband, Walter Cole. Steve is a member of the second generation speakers bureau who share their parent's memories of the Holocaust as well as their own perspectives on growing up as the children of survivors. Steve’s presentation will include short video clips of his mother’s testimony, as well as a powerpoint presentation. The Board of Christian Education encourages all adults and middle and high school students to hear these extraordinary speakers. Parents should determine if their grade school age children are mature enough for these two sessions.

Inclement Weather Policy

Colonial Church will hold Sunday services as scheduled unless the minister absolutely cannot make it to the church. In that event, the decision to cancel services would be made by the minister and the moderator, and a notice would be posted on local TV stations. The bad weather policy for week days is to close the church office whenever the Shawnee Mission School District cancels classes. Canceling activities, other than the worship service, is the responsibility of the person in charge of the activity.
